DEBUNKING THE BENEFITS MYTH

People on benefits are not living mansions with 2 swimming pools and 5 jags in the garage as the ConDems supporters make out. Welfare claimants are already struggling to feed themselves and their kids following this governments mishandling of the economy and this struggle will be magnified with upcoming/proposed changes in welfare and housing benefits. More on the right hand side bar.

As we said in our brief review of the past year's events just before Xmas (repeated below if you missed it!) -2011 saw growing resistance in the UK to cuts and austerity and the rule of the '99%' - as across the globe. In 2012 WSN intends to carry on supporting every single local anti-cuts campaign and workers' dispute, and be prepared to initiate campaigns too if the need arises. We want to continue exposing the tax dodgers and pushing our alternative to cuts, showing international solidarity with our counterparts fighting back across the globe, and to oppose the poison of racism if it rears its ugly head again in our town.

Lots of new people have got involved in WSN over the past year too, and we want to keep ensuring that WSN meetings and activities feel as open as possible to everyone - from seasoned activists to those feeling pushed to do something for the first time. All of this requires being well organised, and ensuring that everyone who wants to can play a part and have their say.

We are therefore holding our first WSN Annual Meeting this month:

- to look at the big picture and sort of issues we're likely to be facing this year (with an invited guest speaker)

- to work out our priorities for local campaigning over the next few months

- to elect a group of people to help run WSN (we don't like the word 'committee'!) who can take on specific roles in making sure from week to week that actions not talk are our main focus, and that what we do is as well organised and well publicised in advance as possible.

Your ideas for WSN's activities this year are very welcome. Please let us have any specific proposals by midday on Friday 13th January at the latest so we've got time to print out copies etc. Proposals received in advance will get priority for debate, though if we have time we'll try to consider any proposals raised on the day. These can be as simple or lengthy as you like (we'd prefer the former!), and can be about WSN's general 'policy' around certain issues, about specific initiatives or actions, or about how we run WSN.

We'll be looking to elect as a minimum:

- A chairperson

- A secretary

- A treasurer

- A media contact

- Online/social media coordinator

- Campaign coordinators (e.g. NHS, disability, etc.)

If you're brave or daft enough to put yourself forward for any of the above roles, again please let us know by midday on Friday 13th Jan so we can plan that part of the meeting.

A long year of campaigning against Tory cuts and austerity measures draws to a close - WSN in 2011

Growing resistance in the UK has become part of inspiring global opposition to injustice and inequality - from the Arab Spring that unfolded in Egypt, Tunisia and beyond in January and February to the mass revolt against a bankers' Europe in Greece, Spain and Ireland, and finally the emergence of the 'Occupy' movement in many countries, drawing attention to the way the '1%' are robbing the '99%' blind.

WSN supporters, as we set out to do nearly two years ago, have continued to throw ourselves into the many campaigns against cuts, and into organising solidarity for workers beginning to fight back. We have tried hard to get across our alternative to cuts - for tax justice and making the wealthiest pay their way. The vast majority of Saturdays have seen a consistent and strong anti-cuts voice in Worthing town centre in the shape of the WSN stall. We've campaigned around the closure of day centres, the withdrawal of County Council support for 4,000 adults with learning difficulties, the reduction of services at Worthing & Southlands Hospitals, the introduction of tuition fees and scrapping of EMA, the attempted privatisation of the NHS and the Royal Mail, and in support of many groups of workers taking industrial action. We opposed attempts by fascists like the BNP to set up shop in our town and thus divert some of the anger about cuts in a racist direction. And we've strongly supported the establishment, for the first time in over 20 years, of a Trades Union Council in Worthing.

In March, two months' hard work by WSN and local unions culminated in around 400 people from Worthing travelling up to what became an historic 750,000-strong TUC demonstration against the cuts in London - "March for the Alternative" - the biggest-ever show of public strength from trade unions in Britain.

At the end of June, WSN worked with the PCS, NUT, UCU and ATL to organise a Trade Union family event in Steyne Gardens on the day of the first major strike against the ConDems - over pension changes.

And of course, just two weeks ago, on "N30", WSN played an important role in promoting an even bigger event in Worthing - the largest trade union gathering in the town in living memory - as three million public sector workers went on strike over pensions. WSN worked succesfully to link the strike over pensions with other groups in our town under attack from the government - like young people, the unemployed, the disabled, and pensioners - groups who were all represented and spoke at the brilliant strike rally in a packed St Pauls Centre on the day. The report on South Today TV News commented on how much community support there seemed to be for the strike day in Worthing!

All of this is done entirely by volunteers and on an absolute shoestring! We'd like to thank everyone who's given some time up for WSN this year, as well as our trade union affiliates and donors, and those who have made individual contributions, however small - which help keep the anti-cuts material, and the case for our alternative to cuts, going out to the people of Worthing.

There is no doubt a similar, if not even more busy, year ahead, with this government showing little sign of changing course. We need to redouble our efforts, and above all we need a bigger movement against what our rulers are attempting to do to ordinary people. The alternative could very serious indeed - at best, the Tories could take social provision in this country back to pre-1945 levels, and at worst their crazy economics and the greed of their banker and corporate friends could cause a double-dip recession that makes the 1930s look like a boom era.

So please - make a New Year's resolution to come along to a meeting or a stall, listen and contribute to the arguments, and get involved, in whatever way you can!

Instead of holding our scheduled public meeting this coming Tuesday (4th Oct), we've decided to go out leafletting and petitioning around the Maybridge Estate in Goring. We'll be using the petition about the government's Health & Welfare Bill currently going through the House of Lords, which will pave the way for major cuts and privatisation of the NHS and much else besides, and publicising the 'Block the Bridge - Block the Bill' demonstration in London the following Sunday which we are planning to travel up to (see separate email).

We'll be meeting outside the Golden Lion pub in The Strand, at 6.15 to start off at 6.30pm, and plan to leaflet/door knock for a couple of hours. If you want to join us after we've started just give us a call on 07733 151116 to find out where we are.

Following on from the massive 30th June strike action........

The strikes in Southampton over pay cuts and the threats of losing their jobs if they refuse to sign new contracts has prompted public sector workers to fight back!

This state of affairs is symptomatic of the Coalition Government's intent to embark on a series of ideological policies designed to reflect the austerity measures of the

I.M.F. which have only recently been imposed on the people of Greece. These include :- massive public spending cuts with huge job losses; pay freezes and even pay cuts, as in Southampton; increased pension contributions for public sector workers for less pension receipts on retirement at 68; cuts in benefits, particularly for the most vulnerable in society such as people with disabilities; the wholesale privatisation of public sector assets and services.

Just as in Greece and in Spain, however, people here are waking up and beginning to offer resistance, and the unified strike action by the C.P.S., N.U.T., A.T.L. and U.C.U.on 30th.June was the first effective response, after the T.U.C. Mass Rally in March in London, to the Coalition's austerity programme. The coming months will undoubtedly witness an even stronger response through more co-ordinated Trades Union activity with the support of the general public as more and more of the public begin to suffer from austerity, and in Worthing the W.S.N. will be at the forefront!

Tory governments for a generation, that’s the view of some political commentators following the referendum and the local elections.

Clearly should such a doomsday prediction actually happen the gap between those who have and those who have not will grow even wider. The welfare system and the NHS built up by the taxpayer since the late forties is likely to be handed over to the private sector and broken up, in short millions of hard working citizens hoping to have security in times of poor health or unemployment will have been betrayed.

In many ways what we are seeing is a rerun of the seventies when the Jim Callaghan government was brought down and we all know who followed him – an iron lady with a chainsaw in her handbag eager to chop the NHS and everything state owned.

However today there is a subtle difference. The government we have now is led by what could be called a bunch of Oxbridge spivs. You know the slippery fast talking salesman eager to sell you that one careful owner car yet forgets to tell you the car is made up of 2 wrecked halves.

So how can we prevent a disaster to all we cherish? Clearly the voters were conned by the spivs so electoral methods won’t do it. However there is a more powerful way – the legal route.

At a recent meeting of the Worthing Alliance a talk was given on how the judicial review process coupled with direct action can be used to prevent the governments wrecking tactics. That talk is likely to be repeated at the Worthing Solidarity Network meeting June 15^th. Don’t miss it!

The Coalition Government, one year on:

· Cutting the NHS by £20bn

· Increasing private provision in the NHS

· Trebling student tuition fees

· Increasing private provision of schools

· Attempts to privatise the Royal Mail and our forests

· Cutting the state pension by linking to CPI

· Putting VAT up to 20%

· Slashing public sector jobs and services

And what this has already meant locally:

· Removing social care funding from disabled and elderly people

· Closing day centres for the old and disabled

· Closing youth centres

· Many other public sector job losses, depressing our local economy

· Potential closure of our theatres

And there’s much, much more to come. Estimates are that we have only yet seen about 10% of the cuts put into effect.

The national TUC-called protest of 500,000 people in March showed massive opposition to Cameron and Clegg. Their cuts are not necessary. By any historical comparison the current deficit is not large. In fact, Britain has only had a smaller deficit than the current one, as a proportion of GDP, for 50 of the last 250 years! These cuts are about achieving a ‘smaller state’ – by cutting and privatising – at the expense of the services our families and communities rely on.

So what next? We must use the May Local Elections to send a message to Cameron and Clegg!

We need a different Government before the current one destroys everything we hold dear. Cameron and Clegg don’t have a mandate or a majority, and in Worthing we can do our bit on May 5th to maximise pressure on their Coalition. WSN’s 4-step No To Cuts election advice...

1. Don’t vote Tory

2. Don’t vote Lib Dem

3. If you live in Selden Ward, vote for Mike Barrett. Mike is a Labour candidate who opposes all cuts and has pledged to vote and campaign against any attempts to cut or privatise local services. Mike is the only candidate to date to sign WSN’s “No Cuts” election pledge.

4. If you don’t live in Selden, quiz your candidate to find out where they stand on the cuts. Make sure they will stand up for you and your family and oppose all cuts if you give them your vote.

Election Special

THE outrage over the cuts and austerity measures inflicted on us by the ConDem government has had students and workers protest in London and many other parts of the UK for months. Then on March 26 a massive march and rally in London attracted nearly 1 million from every section of the community – so what has it all achieved so far?

Well to be brutal very little. The government is still there; yes there seem to be murmurings of changes to the NHS reforms but if it’s anything like the On Off On forests sell-off don’t expect a climb down soon. Frankly to achieve what we want we have to hit them where it will hurt THEM. Yes the ballot box.

For many the thought of voting is abhorrent but used skilfully we can use their system to defeat them. This May 5 in many parts of the country there will be council elections as well as the referendum on changes to the unfair voting system. The first thing to bear-in-mind is if there is only a Tory or LibDem standing, a vote for either is a vote for cuts – so don’t vote. The idea in this case is to get the percentage of people voting as low as possible – that takes away their legitimacy for making decisions. By all means vote in the referendum.

On the other hand if there are numerous Party’s standing, tactical voting is a must. Carefully study the flyers sent out by the candidates, see if they say they’re against the cuts, vote for them (unless it’s the BNP or similar). On the other hand if they just prattle on about all the wonderful things they’ll do if elected, challenge them about their position on the cuts policy in the street - or on the doorstep if they call on you. Let them know you won’t be voting for them if they support cuts, and you will let family and friends know they support cuts.

So far we know of one candidate in Worthing who has pledged to fight the cuts, he is
Mike Barrett - Labour Party – fighting the Selden Ward.

Brilliant response to protest

THERE was a brilliant response from the Worthing public to our protest in the town centre on Saturday.

The Worthing Solidarity Network event coincided with the Ukuncut national day of action against corporate tax dodgers and this was taken up as the theme of the day.

Our prominent stall in Montague Place attracted loads of interest from shoppers and a thousand leaflets were handed out.

People are really understanding the link between the cuts being imposed on ordinary people and the huge profits still being gathered in by Big Business tycoons with the approval of their friends in the Conservative Party.

We also staged a mass tour of some of the worst Fat Cat tax dodging companies in Montague Street, demonstrating peacefully but noisily with chants, megaphone and banners outside Vodafone, Topshop, Boots and BHS.

Police were out in force to protect the corporate sector from our crack team of protesters and formed lines outside the front of all the shops mentioned, thus adding to the spectacle and drawing yet more interest from the public.

With public anger at Tory policies rising every day, these protests are only going to get bigger and bigger in the months ahead!
